| Our
Mission
SpayVac™-for-Wildlife, Inc. (SFW), is a New Jersey not-for-profit
corporation, formed in 2003 to
1. take the uniquely effective contraceptive vaccine for deer, SpayVac™,
through the FDA approval process, and
2. produce and sell SpayVac™ at low cost. |

The
Need
Deer overabundance has become extreme in many parts of the US. As
communities struggle with hazards to traffic, disease transmission,
and habitat degradation, many wish for a non-lethal means of controlling
deer populations. Over the past 20 years, with the support of organizations
such as the Humane Society of the United States, the Geraldine R.
Dodge and PNC foundations, the Bureau of Land Management, and the
USDA’s National Wildlife Research Center, biologists have
explored the use of contraceptive vaccines on several species,
particularly
deer and wild horses. While SFW’s initial focus will be
on deer, SpayVac™ may prove useful for controlling populations
of other species as well. |
The
Solution
Unlike any other PZP vaccine, a single dose of SpayVac™ confers
contraceptive protection for several years. This results in less
handling and stress on treated animals, while at the same time,
making field use more practical and economical.
The
Challenge
To go from a highly successful, experimental IC vaccine to a readily
available tool for use in wildlife population control, SpayVac™
must gain FDA approval, which is an expensive and technically demanding
process. Meeting FDA requirements, while keeping the cost of SpayVac™
low enough to permit its widespread use, will require financial
support from the philanthropic community. |
